On the Topic of Creativity
I am so fortunate that I have been able to play the piano my whole life. For me, the piano is a way to express myself and also share my emotions and feelings.
I know sometimes though that my ambition to "conquer" a piece or prepare it for performance can make the creative process, well, non-existent. During a recent conversation with a student, I remembered that music is a creative art form that we need to nurture.
For example, when we learn a new piano piece, we have to "work" hard at it before we can "play" it. However, carving out time to "play" while working at your piece is really important!
To nurture my creativity, I will be trying something new: building in “playtime” at the piano. As I am very much a type "A" personality, I must achieve goals daily, so I will continue to "work" at my repertoire. But, I will include time to be creative: I will pull random music books off my bookshelves and just play; I will play through some of the pieces I learned as a child... I'm sure I will remember the joy of playing that first sonatina again; I will experiment and play pieces in the wrong registers... and try to re-create the sounds of another instrument. That was my absolute FAVORITE thing to do when I was first learning the piano. My only goal: to have fun.
Give this a try and let me know your thoughts by leaving me a comment below. Enjoy your practice time!
