5 Tips to Stay Inspired at the Piano

It’s the peak of summer, yay! Here in Oregon City, we have beautiful weather and long summer days… which makes it easy to fill the time with all kinds of activities. With that said, staying inspired and committed to practicing the piano can sometimes feel like a challenge, but it's 100% possible with the right strategies. Below are some tips to help you stay on track:

#1 Set Clear Goals

Whether it's mastering a new piece or improving your technique, having specific goals can keep you motivated. I recommend having achievable short-term daily/weekly goals so you can remain focused and excited to sit down at the piano every day.

#2 Routine and Consistency

Dedicate a set time each day for practice. To make this easier, find your best time to play the piano. Are you a morning person? If so, schedule your practice for early in the day. Are you a night owl? Then practicing at night may be your best time to make progress. Consistency is the key to making improvements and finding the best time to practice will help you maintain that.

#3 Mix It Up

Explore different genres regularly. This can be easily incorporated into your practice with short, daily sight-reading pieces, or with larger repertoire selections. By practicing a variety of pieces you will keep your practice sessions fresh and exciting!

#4 Chart Your Progress

Take some notes! Regularly logging details from your practice sessions can help you track your improvements and identify areas for growth. This can be as simple as writing down your metronome tempo to detailing how many times you accurately played a difficult passage.

#5 Get Inspired

Explore Youtube! Listen to professional performances online or attend live concerts. Consistently surrounding yourself with music can encourage creativity in your practice.

Remember, the journey of learning how to play the piano is as important as the destination of each piece you master. Happy practicing!
